Ash Wednesday

You are invited to begin the season of Lent with worship on Ash Wednesday, February 18, at 12:00 pm or 7:00 pm.

On this day, we hear the words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Ash Wednesday tells the truth about our lives. We are fragile. We are finite. We are not self-made. Yet in the shape of a cross traced in ashes on your forehead, you also hear a deeper truth. You belong to Christ. In life and in death, you are held by grace.

In the Lutheran tradition, Lent is not about proving yourself to God. It is not about earning favor or achieving spiritual perfection. The cross has already accomplished what we could never accomplish on our own. Instead, Lent invites you to return. Return to prayer. Return to worship. Return to the promises spoken over you in baptism.

While many people think of Lent as a time to give something up, you might also consider taking something up. Add a midweek worship service. Add a daily prayer practice. Add time in Scripture. Add a simple act of generosity. These are not ways to impress God. They are ways to be shaped again by the grace already given to you.

Soup suppers will begin the following week as part of our Lenten rhythm. You will have opportunities to gather around tables, share a simple meal, and walk this season together.

Children and youth are especially encouraged to attend worship on Ash Wednesday. The honesty of this day speaks clearly to every age. We all need the reminder that our hope is not in ourselves, but in Christ crucified and risen.

Come as you are. Leave marked by grace.
