Lent is probably my favorite season of the Church year. Easter Sunday is my favorite day, but Lent is my favorite season. As a kid (and still as an adult) I loved gathering for a midweek service that was short (key word), meditative, and meaningful. I loved gathering with a community of people around an austere, simple meal – soup and bread. It wasn’t lost on me as a kid that there wasn’t desert, a bunch of sides, or an extremely filling meal (though no one went away hungry). It fit with the season that often focused on repentance, disciplines in contrast to our culture that normalizes consumeristic, gluttonous, lavish desires and lifestyles. Even if I bought in to the ways of the world the rest of the year and rest of the week, there was something about being pulled out of it that midweek night with a whole community of people to recenter our lives and priorities – sometimes it may have even influenced perspective and practices the rest of the week.
I invite you once again this year to enter into the disciplines of Lent. Even more than giving something up for Lent, I encourage you to add something to your life for seven weeks: a midweek worship. Our Lenten homily (short sermon) series will be on some of the stations of the cross. We will gather for soup suppers first on Wednesday nights at 6pm followed by about a ½ hour worship of beautiful meditative worship. All of this culminates with Holy Week where we experience that Passion Story of Christ on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, followed by the joy and pinnacle of Jesus’ story with Easter Sunday. It’s one thing to talk about disciplines and Jesus’ passion, it’s another thing to experience them. Let it touch you and shape you. Come!
Your brother in Christ,

Pr. Jim
