Our last full day before departing for home tomorrow. Today we took the bus to Venice (we stayed at a hotel just outside the island) where we then caught a ferry that took us to St. Mark’s Square. We split into two groups and had guided tours through St. Mark’s Basilica. Impressive! Finished in 1094 A.D. after 400 years of construction. One can see why it took so long – the ceilings are covered with gold plated leaflets that make up these breathtaking mosaics. One becomes so in awe of the ceilings one misses the stone floors that are just as impressive. The two previous churches that stood in its place burned down. Clearly, they built this to last. Not only the test of time, but the millions and millions of pilgrims who have walked its floors. After our tour we were set free to explore Venice on our own. It was record-breaking heat. Nevertheless, people enjoyed the uniqueness and beauty of Venice. We gathered together at a restaurant in Venice for our last meal together. It was a fabulous trip! The heat exhaustion took some wind out of the sails, but it was still wonderful to experience these incredible places, see these amazing sites, and experience it all with sisters and brothers in Christ. I think we all feel very grateful – I know I do.
